A combat boot is any rugged military boot; a jungle boot is a combat boot engineered for hot, wet, humid terrain. The giveaway is the drainage vents and often a canvas upper — features that let a jungle boot shed water and breathe, where a standard leather combat boot is built to keep water out.
The core difference: drainage and breathing
The defining feature of a jungle boot is its drainage system. Rows of brass or plastic vent eyelets sit along the arch/instep, usually screened with mesh to block grit. When you wade a stream or sweat through a march, water drains out and air flows in, so the boot dries fast. Combat boots — and especially desert boots, which deliberately delete the vents to keep sand out — have no drainage at all.
The upper differs too. Jungle boots use a canvas or textile upper (with a leather toe cap and heel counter) for airflow and quick drying. A leather combat boot holds water and dries slowly — fine in temperate or dry conditions, miserable in the jungle.
Why jungle boots exist
The jungle boot was developed and refined through the Vietnam era (roughly 1962–1966) after troops in leather boots suffered rotting footwear and foot infections in the wet. Adding drainage and a breathable upper directly attacked "jungle rot" and trench foot — the boot's whole reason for being.

The Indian jungle boot — FDDI pattern
In India the service jungle boot is built to the FDDI/SPEC/Jungle Boot/08:2014 pattern. Typical construction:
- 80/20 polyester-viscose water-repellent textile upper
- Full-chrome leather toe cap and heel counter (1.2–1.8 mm)
- Nylon lining
- Black PU direct-moulded sole (≥4 mm, with 2.5 mm cleats)
- Brass drainage eyelets on the arch, nylon laces, ~160 mm leg, roughly 750–850 g/pair
The Indian leather combat/DMS boot, by contrast, is a full-grain or printed-grain leather boot to specs such as JSS 8430-11:2016 (leather printed grain) or the DVS boot (IND/TC/3844 / JSS 8430-12) — no vents, built for durability and a parade finish.
Which should you order?
- Jungle / high-humidity, monsoon, riverine or forest duty → jungle boot (drainage + textile upper).
- General field, parade, temperate or dry duty → leather DMS/DVS combat boot.
- Many units issue both, seasonally.
