The ammunition boot is the ancestor of nearly every military ankle boot worn on parade in India and the Commonwealth today. Made from thick pebble-grained leather with iron-shod toe and heel and a hobnailed sole, it served for roughly a century before the DMS (Directly Moulded Sole) boot took its place — keeping the same handsome upper but swapping hobnails for a moulded rubber sole.
Where the name comes from
The ammunition boot was the standard combat and drill boot of the British Army and its Commonwealth forces from at least the mid-1860s to the 1960s, replacing the earlier ankle boots in service since the early 1800s. The "ammunition" in the name reflects that it was a general-issue, government-supplied item — quartermaster's stores footwear, issued like ammunition.
How the ammunition boot was built
- Thick pebble-grained (pebbled) leather upper, ankle height, unlined.
- Iron plates at the toe and heel for wear resistance.
- Hobnailed leather sole — dozens of studded nails driven into the sole for grip and durability in the field.
- Toe-capped, closed lacing, a high polish achievable on the smooth toe.
The hobnails made the boot last but also made it heavy, cold and noisy on hard surfaces — which eventually drove the switch to a moulded sole.
The move to DMS
From 1958 the British Army introduced the DMS boot — Directly Moulded Sole — which kept an upper very similar to the wartime ammunition boot but replaced the hobnailed leather sole with a rubber/synthetic sole moulded directly onto the upper. It was lighter, warmer, quieter and quicker to make.
The Indian connection is striking: the leather combat boot used by the Indian Army has remained largely unchanged in pattern for well over a century, with the main evolution being the addition of the Directly Moulded Sole from the 1980s. In other words, the modern Indian DMS parade boot is a direct descendant of the ammunition boot.
Where you still see it
Ammunition and DMS boots — now formally called Boots, Ankle, General Service — remain in use for ceremonial and parade duties across Commonwealth armies, most famously by the British Household Division mounting the King's Guard. In India the same black leather DMS ankle boot and oxford are core parade and duty footwear for the Army, police, paramilitary and NCC, built to specifications such as IND/TC/3780 (leather oxford DMS) and the JSS 8430 service-boot series.
