DMS and DVS are two ways of joining a boot's sole to its leather upper — both without stitching at the join. DMS = Directly Moulded Sole (a PU or rubber sole moulded onto the upper); DVS = Direct Vulcanised Sole (a rubber sole vulcanised onto the upper). The difference is the process and the usual sole material, and Indian tenders often name one specifically.
The core difference
Both constructions bond the sole straight to the leather with no stitched seam — which is exactly why they resist water and hard use. What differs is how that bond is made:

How each is made
A DMS boot is built by placing the lasted leather upper into a mould and injecting or pressing a PU/rubber sole onto it. The sole and the bond form in one step. It's efficient, repeatable and gives a clean, comfortable boot — which is why the standard black leather DMS oxford (to IND/TC/3780) is the classic Indian parade and duty shoe.
A DVS boot instead has a rubber sole vulcanised onto the upper — rubber is cured under heat so it bonds and hardens directly to the boot. The result is a very durable, high-grip outsole suited to rough terrain. The Indian service DVS boot is specified under IND/TC/3844 (Ordnance) and JSS 8430-12:2016 (Joint Services).
Which do you need?
- Parade, ceremonial, gate and general duty → a DMS oxford or ankle boot — lighter, takes a high shine.
- Combat, patrol, all-terrain field duty → a DVS boot — vulcanised rubber grip and durability.
