Safety Shoe Standards & Grades Explained (S1, S1P, S2, S3)

2026-07-20 · 6 min read

Safety footwear is graded by how much protection it gives, using a simple set of codes — S1, S1P, S2 and S3. Every grade starts from a toe cap that withstands a 200-joule impact, then layers on extra protection. Knowing these codes lets buyers match the shoe to the workplace hazard instead of over- or under-buying.

The safety grades at a glance

  • S1 — 200 J toe cap, antistatic build, energy-absorbing heel, and an oil-resistant outsole. Good for dry indoor environments like assembly and warehousing.
  • S1P — everything in S1 plus an anti-penetration midsole that guards against nails and sharp debris underfoot.
  • S2 — S1 plus a water-resistant upper, for damp or wash-down areas.
  • S3 — the complete everyday spec: S1P protection plus water resistance plus a cleated (lugged) outsole for grip. The workhorse grade for construction and heavy industry.

Slip resistance is marked separately as SR (SRA/SRB/SRC), and electrical-hazard insulation as EH. Match these add-ons to the floor and task.

Steel toe or composite toe?

Both meet the same 200 J impact requirement, so the choice is about weight and environment:

  • Steel toe — toughest and lowest cost; the default for general industry.
  • Composite toe (fibreglass / kevlar) — lighter and non-metallic, so it doesn't conduct heat or cold and passes through metal detectors. Ideal for airports, metro, cold storage and electrical work.

How to choose for your site

  1. Underfoot risk (nails, offcuts) → choose S1P or S3 for the anti-penetration midsole.
  2. Wet or wash-down floors → choose S2 or S3 for the water-resistant upper.
  3. Slippery surfaces → confirm an SRC slip rating.
  4. Electrical work → specify EH and a composite toe.
  5. Comfort for long shifts → composite toe with a PU/PU or PU/rubber sole keeps weight down.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do S1, S1P, S2 and S3 mean on safety shoes?

They are the common protection grades for safety footwear. S1 covers a 200 J toe cap, antistatic build and energy-absorbing heel; S1P adds an anti-penetration midsole; S2 adds a water-resistant upper; S3 combines all of the above with a cleated outsole — the most complete everyday spec.

What is the difference between S1P and S3?

S1P is S1 plus an anti-penetration midsole. S3 adds water resistance and a cleated outsole on top of S1P, making it the go-to grade for construction and heavy industry.
